U.S. Representative Richard Hanna and fourth grade students at New York Mills Elementary School joined millions of their peers today to celebrate the National Education Association's "Read Across America Day."

The classes of fourth grade teachers Mrs. Jennifer Sroka and Mrs. Tiffany Schmidt marked the 16th annual "Read Across America Day," by sharing passages of Dr. Seuss' book, "Oh, the Places You'll Go" with Rep. Hanna. "Read Across America Day celebrates Dr. Seuss' birthday as well as the joy of reading. New York Mills Superintendent Kathy Houghton and Elementary School Principal Dr. Renée Wilson were also at the event.
More than 45 million readers, both young and old, are expected pick up a book and read today.

"Reading opens you up to the world and can take you anywhere," Rep. Hanna told the students. "The ability to read can and will change your life. It is the single most valuable skill you can learn and I encourage you to keep reading today and every day. So, read with your classmates, with your parents and read alone. You'll be surprised where you can go with a good book."

The National Education Association's goal is to teach America's children about the importance of reading and build a nation of readers.

"We are proud of all of our students and teachers here at New York Mills and the emphasis we place on educational excellence and that starts with literacy," Principal Dr. Wilson said. "There is no better way to expand your imagination, develop your mind and discover new things than by diving into a good book. Words, spoken or written, nourish our lives and New York Mills is proud to celebrate the NEA's "Read Across America Day' with Congressman Hanna."

Prior to the start of the reading event, Rep. Hanna presented a flag flown over the U.S. Capitol Dome to the Board of Education, which will be displayed in the library.
